Yuan & Chris – Sooke BC Wedding

Beautiful Wedding at the Sooke Harbour House, just outside Victoria BC 🙂

Yuan and Chris came all the way to Victoria from Toronto for their wedding.  They chose the lovely Sooke Harbour House for their venue.  I always love shooting there!   It’s close to Victoria, but far enough away to feel like an escape.  The scenery is spectacular, the food is amazing, and the atmosphere is cozy.  The weather was playing tricks with us in the morning, so they decided to move the ceremony indoors, which was also lovely.

Yuan got ready at the nearby Best Western Oceanfront resort, while Chris got ready at the Sooke Harour House.

I love seeing the groom’s face when he sees his bride for the first time in her dress!

Then we headed outside for some portraits.  The sun showed up as well!  Hooray for beautiful seaside weddings! sooke harbour house wedding photographer photography nichole taylor nicole sooke wedding photographer photography victoria bc

Yuan and Chris opted to book a photobooth with me at their reception.  Photobooths are so much fun, I highly recommend them for getting some fun images of your guests!

Q & A with the bride and groom:

1)      Tell me how you first met? Who what when where why? Give me the details.

We met in the students’ residence at University of Ottawa in the summer of 2008. Yuan was finishing up her thesis in chemical engineering. Chris was a law student from University of Alberta; he was in Ottawa that summer for an internship and he found a unit within the same apartment (4 units in each apartment, co-ed) as Yuan. We became roommates. We didn’t interact much during the first month. One day, we were both in the kitchen and Chris was making pizza. He was nice and offered me to share dinner with him. We talked and clicked right away. But fearing that things would become weird between us since we were roommates, Yuan avoided Chris for a week following the first encounter. But Chris proved to be irresistible; we soon got back together and have been great together ever since.

2)      When did you know he/she was the one? Was there something he/she did?, etc.

Yuan: Don’t think there was a specific defining moment or an event as our relationship just effortlessly progressed over time. Chris is always fun, caring, resourceful and super reliable. By the end of that summer we met, I had to move from Ottawa to Toronto. Chris offered to help. U-Haul didn’t have the small van we reserved but ended up giving us a commercial-sized truck! Instead of backing out, Chris drove that monster from Ottawa to Toronto. It took us all night, but despite the challenge and lack of sleep, we managed to keep each other’s spirit up. I then realized that we are a really good team and we work really well together. Then Chris returned back to Edmonton to finish his law school. Despite the long distance, we stayed in touch everyday and felt more and more awesome about each other.

Chris: It’s difficult to focus on just one thing… I’ve always admired so many things about Yuan and I think we always were two peas in a pod.  One moment that I thought was very special was when Yuan came to visit me in Edmonton during a bitterly cold winter right after we met. It was a super romantic thing to do, and I really appreciated being able to spend that Christmas with her.

 3)      Tell me about the proposal.

We didn’t really have a very dramatic proposal… we went camping during the long weekend of Thanksgiving 2012 (Thanksgiving camping/canoeing at Algonquin Provincial Park is our annual tradition.) and we decided over roasting marshmallows and a warm fire that it was time to make a real commitment to each other.

4)      Tell me the one thing you love most about each other.

Yuan: I love everything about Chris, even his quirks that drive me crazy sometimes, because they also make him unique and really awesome most of the time.

Chris: There are tons of things I love about Yuan! But if I had to pick one thing I’d say I like her impish smile and her fun-loving attitude.

 5)      If you feel comfortable, share with me something silly or quirky the other person does.

Yuan: Chris is a hopeless romantic who prefers dim flickering candlelight, even for reading! He likes squirrels because they examine their nuts extremely closely before burying them for storage – Chris likes to examine all things carefully and uses his fingers to feel any surface imperfections, and then he keeps things in storage. Chris believes that he is capable of making or repairing all things in the world: he once even repaired my bra, and did a fantastic job.

Chris: Yuan really likes horror movies, but closes her eyes during all the really scary parts.

 6)      Besides getting married –‐ what was your favourite thing about your wedding day?

Everything was as planned and better. We loved the opportunity to get together with family and friends. Many of them had to travel long distances to attend our wedding, so we felt extra honoured by their presence. The dinner was fantastic and we heard many compliments afterwards.

 7)      What inspired your décor or theme?

Our theme was a Chinese-North American fusion, with décor mostly in red (the traditional Chinese wedding colour) and white.

 8)      What’s one thing you wish you would have known earlier in regards to planning?

Can’t think of anything. Everything went according to plan and better, like magic! Focus on the positive, don’t sweat the small stuff, trust the goodwill of your friends and expertise of the professionals, just go with the flow, and all will be well. Guess the one thing we wish we’d known earlier was to not stress (we stressed a little bit, but not too much, but that little bit of stress turned out to be not necessary).
